The Meaning of Matthew - Judy Shepard

Matthew Shepard est un jeune homme qui a été assassiné à l'âge de 21 ans parce qu'il était homosexuel. Ce "fait divers" s'est produit il y a onze ans, le 6 Octobre 1998. À l'époque, les réactions ont été nombreuses et beaucoup ont été fortement marqués par la mort de ce beau jeune homme qui ne voulait de mal à personne.

Sa mère, Judy Shepard, viens de publier ce livre où elle raconte la vie et la mort de Matthew, ainsi que cette terrible épreuve par laquelle elle a du passer sans comprendre tout de suite la ferveur déclenchée autour de cet évènement dramatique.

Il va de soi que je ne me permettrais pas de noter un tel livre. Il ne s'agit ni d'un roman, ni d'une fiction, mais d'un témoignage, et, malheureusement, de la réalité. Témoignage bouleversant d'une mère racontant la vie et la mort de son fils...

"But, just as most kids don't want to know the details of their parents having sex, I didn't want to know any of the details of either of my sons' sexual activities. Today I realize that this is one of the bigger roadblocks when it comes to people accepting gay people - particularly gay men. Some folks think being gay is only about having sex with someone of the same gender, and that's the last thing many people want to think about. Now that I've become friends with so many gay people, my eyes have opened to the fact that, straight or gay, sexual orientation is about so much more than just who you go to bed with. It's about relationships. Relationships that are like any other. It can be joyous and sad and sometimes unsuccessful. But like so many other people, it took me a while to figure that out."

Matthew a été battu et tué avec une violence effroyable et laissé pour mort attaché à une barrière.

"Matthew Wayne Shepard died at 12:53 a.m. on Monday, October 12. But our beloved, opinionated, compassionate, contentious, curious, and loving son had actually died five days earlier, tied to that fence outside Laramie."

En France, la HALDE (Haute Autorité de Lutte contre les Discriminations et pour l'Égalité) a pour mission de lutter contre les discriminations prohibées par la loi, de fournir toute l’information nécessaire, d’accompagner les victimes, d’identifier et de promouvoir les bonnes pratiques pour faire entrer dans les faits le principe d’égalité. Au États-Unis, 10 ans après la mort de Matthew, il n'existe toujours pas de loi fédérale contre les crimes basés sur l'orientation sexuelle réelle ou supposée de la victime.

"A federal hate-crimes law had been in place for nearly thirty years by the time Matt was killed. But it didn't (and, as I write this, still doesn't) include protections based on sexual orientation - even though those crimes constitute nearly 16 percent of all bias-based crimes. And although there are forty-five states with hate-crimes laws on the books, only thirty-one of them included protections based on a victim's real or perceived sexual orientation. Another five states, Wyoming among them, had no hate-crimes law whatsoever."

La mère de Matthew a créé la Matthew Shepard Foundation avec comme objectifs d'éradiquer la haine - qu'elle soit basée sur la race, l'ethnie, le genre ou l'orientation sexuelle, d'obtenir l'égalité  LGBT - Lesbiennes, Gays, Bisexuels et Transsexuels, et de mettre la priorité sur les enfants - l'age moyen du "Coming Out" étant de quatorze ans, de plus en plus d'adolescents ouvertement gays doivent faire face à la discrimination à l'école et/ou à la maison.

ce livre témoignage ne peut laisser indifférent. Il y a malheureusement d'autres pays où l'homosexualité est encore un crime puni de la peine de mort...
